Merzouga, a small town in southeastern Morocco, serves as the gateway to the vast Sahara Desert. Known for its towering Erg Chebbi dunes, Merzouga offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the beauty and stillness of the desert.
Here’s our honest review of our 3-day Merzouga desert trek. We’ve highlighted some practical tips for the journey so that you can make the most of your visit.
Best Time to Visit Merzouga
You should visit Merzouga between September and April, as the daytime temperatures are mild to warm. From November to February, the evenings are chilly, so you should pack layers for the night.
In summer, from May to August, the weather is intense, and the temperature often exceeds 40°C (104°F). This makes camel trekking or climbing dunes unpleasant, and sand storms may disrupt travel plans.
Also, you may notice high accommodation and tour pricing during peak season ((late December, Easter, and spring), as it coincides with European holidays. Consider off-season visits during late November or February for better deals and small groups.
How Much Does a Desert Safari Cost?
The prices of a desert safari in Merzouga can vary. A budget tour starts at around $50 per person for a simple overnight trip (basic camp and short camel trek). Luxury tours, with private tents, gourmet meals, and added amenities, can go up to $300 or more per person.
We chose a semi-private tour costing $85 per person. It included two nights in the desert with camel treks, all meals, and local guides. Some companies may quote exorbitant prices, up to $650, for the same itinerary, so beware of inflated prices.
Day-by-Day Itinerary of the Merzouga Desert Trip
Day 1: Sunset and Wild Camp
Our adventure began near Merzouga when we were welcomed with traditional tea and met our guides and camels. The camels were calm, and it took a few minutes for us to adjust to the wavy motion of the camel.
Then, the experience became enjoyable as we moved through the dunes of Erg Chebbi. As the sun began to set, we paused to take in the beauty. After another short ride, we reached our “wild camp,” which featured private tents with sleeping pads and blankets, a cooking tent for our guides, and a candlelit dinner table under the stars.
Day 2: Sandboarding, Oasis, Tallest Dune and Standard Camp
The next day, we woke up early to watch the sunrise and tried sandboarding and two-hour camel trekking to a desert oasis. At an oasis, we enjoyed authentic Berber pizza, freshly baked by our guide in the hot sand.
Then, we climbed some dunes in Erg Chebbi, and the panoramic view at the top was worth every step. As evening approached, we arrived at a standard camp with modern amenities. We enjoyed warm tea, a delicious dinner, and a Berber drum performance.
Day 3: 4×4 Tour to Nomadic Camp
The final day was a 4×4 tour of the desert. We explored ancient canal systems for irrigation through rainwater at Hassi Labied Oasis.
Next, we visited Khamlia Village, home to the Gnawa people. Their rhythmic music and rich cultural history reflect their sub-Saharan roots. The day’s highlight was meeting nomadic families living on the outskirts of the dunes.
Honest Review of the Merzouga Desert Trip
The stunning landscapes, cultural immersion, and adventure made our desert trip unforgettable. Our guides’ knowledge and warm hospitality added depth to the experience.
The camels were also well-treated, and the trip was of good value for the money. We enjoyed a semi-private tour, comfortable accommodations, delicious meals, and an authentic connection with the desert.
However, we visited during peak season, and the noise at the standard camp on the second night disrupted the serene desert ambiance. The camps were nearby, creating a crowded and less personal atmosphere.
Summing Up
Overall, Merzouga is a destination like no other. For first-time visitors, planning is key. Consider off-peak season to fully immerse yourself in the desert’s serenity and avoid tourist crowds.
That way, your Merzouga trip can be a magical journey into the heart of the Sahara. It’ll leave you with memories to treasure for a lifetime!
